Autumn Events 2015

Open Group Conference - Architecting the Boundaryless Organization

This conference ran from 19th to 22nd of October in Edinburgh.  My talk was on Boundaryless Customer Engagement, and took place on the Monday afternoon. The material was developed in collaboration with my colleague Andrew Forsyth.

The business value of customer analytics and big data is not just about what you can discover or infer about the customer, but how you can use this insight promptly and effectively across multiple touchpoints (including e-Commerce systems and CRM) to create a powerful and truly personalized customer experience.

For most organizations, mobilizing this kind of intelligence raises organizational challenges as well as technical ones. I talked about how some leading companies are starting to address these challenges, and described the vital role of enterprise architecture in supporting such initiatives.

Key takeaways:
  • A reference model for omnichannel consumer analytics and engagement.
  • An architectural approach for closed-loop integration across multiple customer touchpoints and diverse data platforms.
  • A template business case for building and extending your business and technical capabilities for customer engagement.

Unicom Data Analytics Forum - Exploring the Business Value of Predictive and Real-Time Analytics

Was held at the Kensington Hilton in West London on 2nd December.

My talk was on Real-Time Personalization - Exploring the Customer Genome. Retail and consumer organizations have started to develop more personalized interaction with customers, based on rapid analysis of a broad range of customer attributes and propensities, known metaphorically as “genes”. These may be used to target campaigns more accurately, or to generate the next best action in real-time for a specific customer.

For more details and registration, please visit the Unicom website.

Here are the two presentations. There are significant overlaps between the two.

Enterprise Architecture Forum - Spring 2013

Unicom is planning another Enterprise Architecture Forum in London on March 21st. These generally attract a good audience of senior IT management from blue chip organizations. At the previous Forum in September, we had case studies from finance, oil and higher education. Anyone wishing to present a case study at the next event, please contact me or Unicom.

We are also planning an Organizational Intelligence Forum, possibly on April 25th to coincide with the Performance Management Forum.

Those outside the UK may wish to plan a trip to London to coincide with these events.

These events are part-funded by commercial sponsorship and vendor exhibitions. Please contact me or Unicom for a vendor information pack.

Forthcoming Events

The next public dates for my workshops with Unicom are as follows.

Business Architecture Bootcamp (November 20th-21st)
Organizational Intelligence Workshop (November 22nd)
Architecture-Led Procurement (November 28th)

Please tell them you saw it on my blog when you book. These workshops are also available inhouse.

I am planning some additional workshops for the New Year. I am developing a one-day Foundations of Business workshop, which will serve as a warm-up to the Business Architecture Bootcamp for those with little business background. And I plan to add some further options to the Business Architecture Bootcamp, to provide more choice of material and more flexibility. Please contact me for more details.

And I am discussing some New Year events with Unicom. I am hoping to persuade Unicom to run an event on Organizational Intelligence, possibly in January 2013. Meanwhile, the Enterprise Architecture Forum goes from strength to strength, and I shall be happy to help Unicom plan the next one, probably in March 2013. In particular, I am looking for one or two volunteers from end-user organizations, willing to present an architectural case study for discussion by a panel of experts. If you are interested, please contact me.

Early Autumn Events 2012

#entarch #bizarch September 2012 kicks off with a free webinar, which provides a taster for my 2-day Business Architecture Bootcamp.

By popular demand, I have slightly restructured the Bootcamp so that it can be taken in two separate one-day installments. However, we expect that most people will continue to take both days together.

And I am particularly looking forward to participating in the Systems Thinking Summit in early October,

Architecting the multi-sided business

A modern business typically needs to operate in multiple markets simultaneously, and satisfy the overlapping needs of different stakeholders. The emerging architectural response to this challenge is to configure the enterprise as a platform of services, rather than a traditional value chain. For example, a retail company can define its business model as providing a platform for manufacturers to sell their good to consumers. But this kind of transformation involves profound architectural challenges, which business architects need to be able to master.

In this talk, I will present an extract from my 2-day Business Architecture Bootcamp. For details of the full bootcamp, please go to the Unicom website.

Subjects are not Objects - Enterprise Modelling using Projective Analysis

A systems analyst who seeks to identify an enterprise's requirements for systems and services will try to elicit from the enterprise's stakeholders their models of the enterprise's structures, functions, purposes, performance, supply chain, markets, competition etc., and to articulate those models in the style of the day, be it object-oriented, agent-based, formal, structured or soft.

Accounts of this practice reveal that stakeholders are often reluctant to expose their 'true' models, either because they conflict with some 'authorised version' or because they don't actually know 'what is going on', or why.

A side-effect of the analysis is often an altered understanding by the enterprise's stakeholders of relationships between their own desires and those of their peers, managers, customers etc., which usually reveals political, personal, technical and financial risks that extend far beyond those envisaged by the original project brief.

This phenomenon reveals the sources and, to a large extent, the components, of enterprise models to be 'subjects' — systems that anticipate the satisfaction of their own desires — rather than the 'objects' with which our classical engineering modeling frameworks were designed to cope.

My friend and colleague Bernie Cohen will introduce 'Projective Analysis' (PAN), a modeling praxis, framework and toolset in which subjects' models of their enterprise may be articulated, composed and manipulated to reveal the risks to which their enterprise is exposed and to evaluate the actions that they propose to alleviate them.

Bernie Cohen spent 18 years as a telecom systems engineer with ITT, developing real-time software for Europe's first SPC telephone switch and the world's first PCM exchange, and eventually founding the Software Research Group at STL Harlow, where he wrote one of the first textbooks on Formal Methods. In 1984, he was appointed to the Racal Chair of IT at the University of Surrey. In 1990, he briefly returned to industry with Rex, Thomson and Partners, a safety critical systems consultancy, before taking the Chair of Computing at City University, from where he retired in 2003. His research interests have gradually moved from telecom systems design to the gaps between formal computer science and human agency..

Business Architecture Bootcamp

Most courses in business architecture (or any other methodology for that matter) start by teaching a set of generic principles, followed by a standard set of tasks and techniques. The tasks and techniques are then illustrated by some simplistic or contrived examples and exercises. Video store, anyone?

In my forthcoming business architecture bootcamp (Unicom Middlesex, November 22-23), I'm going to lead an exploration into some serious and non-trivial business problems, based on some real experience in a real company. The class will experiment with different ways of modelling these problems, spanning the Five Views of Business Architecture, in order to go deeper and deeper into an understanding of these problems and their architectural implications. I don't know exactly where we shall end up, but I am confident that this is a better way of learning the things that really matter to business architects.

EA Talk on Managing Complexity

#entarch I shall be was one of the speakers at the Unicom EA Forum on February 24th in Central London. This post now edited to remove invitation and include slides.

Outline

As business becomes more complex, enterprises are faced with structural complexities that critically affect business performance. Enterprise architecture provides a way of planning and coordinating both human systems and technical systems (including IT), and thereby overcoming the structural inhibitors to business performance. I shall talk about some emerging practical methods for business architecture, and show how these can be used in tandem with the standard popular approaches to manage the true complexity of the business.

Following my talk, Professor Bernie Cohen talked about some related work by Philip Boxer and himself. Slides no longer available. https://www.slideshare.net/PhilipBoxer/mgt-complex-ea-feb-2011-healthcare
